Somewhere to Put the Patterns

Someone asked me recently why I never put any of my work online. I said I was a private person. They said that was fine, but nobody had asked for my diary. This was irritatingly difficult to argue with.

I’ve always assumed hard work would be enough. Learn the skills, keep improving and make yourself useful. If the work was good, someone would eventually notice. I hadn’t given much thought to how. Work doesn’t introduce itself, and people can’t find something that has never been left anywhere. You can spend years learning how to be good company, but it won’t help much if you never leave the house. Apparently discovery requires some participation.

I write quite a lot, though most of it is notes. Software, science, old stories and other things that don’t always seem related when they begin. They usually end up in a drawer, where they remain impressively private and almost perfectly undiscoverable.

This site is a small attempt to change that. Think of it as one of those shelves where people leave a book and take another. I’ll put the work here and leave it at that. Perhaps someone will pick something up. Perhaps they’ll put it back. Either way, the drawer is no longer doing all the publishing.
